Mini guide: Best Things To Do around Unawatuna, Sri Lanka

travel to sri lanka

1. RENT A MOTORBIKE

The best way to explore Unawatuna and surroundings is definetely by motorbike. You can reach anywhere you want and stop whenever you feel like it! We love the freedom of this experience. There is so much to see in the area. From the fascinating Buddhist temples out of the beaten track to the paddy fields with peacock crossing your way. If you feel like taking a longer trip, I would definetely recommend going all the way from Unawatuna to Mirrissa and then come back during the sunset hours. The drive is magical !

2. TAKE YOGA CLASS AT SRI YOGA SHALA

Located only 1,5 km inland from Wijaya Beach, Sri Yoga Shala is an incredible place to practice Yoga - a true paradise on Earth. The center welcomes both experts and amateurs yogis, 3 times a day for different yoga styles. The surroundings are just too perfect to be true. Palm trees, exotic plants, monkeys and parrots  combain together will give you the best experience possible.

3. TREAT YOURSELF TO A SPA DAY AT SANCTUARY SPA UNAWATUNA

Sanctuary SPA , located in the small, beautiful garden full of colorful flowers, right by the Unawatuna's main beach is the best place for both beneficial Ayurvedic full body massage, harmonizing Shirodara or relaxing steam bath. I have tried all of those treatments and I absolutely enjoyed every minute spent in this tranquil place. You know whats the best part ? :) After every treatment you get a free coconut ! And we all loooove free coconuts, don't we ?

4. VISIT GALLE FORT

Galle is a jewel. A Unesco World Heritage Site, this historic city is a delight to explore on foot, an endlessly exotic old trading port blessed with imposing Dutch-colonial buildings, ancient mosques and churches, grand mansions and museums. Wandering its rambling lanes you'll pass stylish cafes, quirky boutiques and impeccably restored hotels owned by local and foreign artists, writers, photographers and designers.

5. GO SURFING

Sri Lanka is one of the most reliable surf destinations in the Indian Ocean. Beginners will find plenty of surf schools in Sri Lanka to learn the basics, while more experienced surfers are bound to have fun exploring the uncrowded line-ups and off-the-radar breaks. My personal favourite beach for surfing is definetely Kabalana beach located in Ahangama, between Kathaluwa and Ahangama railway stations. Its also the beach where we shoot our latest lookbook (check it here).

6. WATCH A SUNSET & TRY OUT THE INSTAFAMOUS BEACH SWING AT WIJAYA BEACH

The most Instagrammed place of Sri Lanka is probably the beach swing at Wijaya Beach. Its fun and it definitely looks magical, especially when the sun is going down. While at Wijaya beach make sure to check out one of the trendiest venue in the area - Wijaya beach restaurant. Their food, cocktails & relaxed ambience will still your heart.

 7. ATTEND FLOWER POWER PARTY AT ZAZOU BEACH IN THALPE

If you happen to be in the area between January to March, make sure to check out The Flower Power Party at Zazou Beach in Thalpe. This crazy mix of colorful-hearty flowers, songs, decoration, hippie clothes with the feeling of freedom will be definetely the night to remember. The event is a perfect opportunity to dance to the sound of unforgettable melodies by Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Cher, Roy Orbison and Led Zeppelin, among many others. Dress up & have fun !

8. TRY A DELICIOUS VEGAN MEAL AT JINA'S RESTAURANT

" In the Zen monasteries in Japan, China and Korea, to be a cook one should be highly developed in spirituality. The cook should be able to concentrate and maintain a positive and friendly mental state ... In this sort of way I try to make my food a gift to the World now and for the years to come ".

This is the cook's statement from the first page of the menu and I can assure you that everything tastes as good as it sounds. This mighty fine place offers a wide array of vegan and vegetarian dishes. As it's always busy and everything is freshly prepared, you may have to wait a while but the wait is definitely worth it.
